Tourism in the Hamburg Central District

If you visit Hamburg, you should not pass up a visit to the Michaelis Church. It is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Germany. It was built around 1600 and like many of Hamburg’s buildings it was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, although it was extensively restored in 1952. The large copper dome is considered today to be one of the emblems of Hamburg. Likewise, you should not miss an opportunity to visit the old merchant quarter and its brick expressionist architecture. The roofs of these buildings are wrought of copper and the upper storeys are staggered. Many of these buildings are decorated with sculptures.

An excursion to the Inner and Outer Alster lakes is also a must. These lakes offer an abundance of leisure activities, from a boat trip on the Alster Steamer to a visit to the Alster Pavillon, or you could just relax a little in one of the numerous cafés and restaurants. Make sure you also take a trip to the Speichterstadt in Hamburg – the nineteenth century merchant storehouse quarter. This is the oldest international harbour of the Wilhelminian period. The old buildings will win you over with their bizarre gables and turrets in Wilhelminian brick gothic style.
