Metropolis on the Elbe

Hamburg lies to the north of Germany, directly on the River Elbe. As a City State it is simultaneously a federal capital. To the north the city borders on the state of Schleswig-Holstein and south of the Elbe on Niedersachsen. After Berlin, Hamburg is the second biggest city in Germany and one of the biggest cities in Europe. 1.8 million inhabitants live in a total of 105 urban districts.

Hamburg’s city centre and most of the rest of the city lie north of the River Elbe. The Alster – the gorgeous man-made lake in the heart of Hamburg – is a subsidiary of the Elbe and is divided into the Inner Alster and the Outer Alster. The Inner Alster is surrounded by a myriad of shopping opportunities, whereas the Outer Alster’s green open spaces invite you to linger. In particular during the summer, people turn out in numbers to take a walk, go for a jog, or just to relax. With more than 2400, Hamburg has more bridges than Amsterdam and Venice combined.

If you like it glamorous, you will feel at home in Eppendorf, Winterhude or Blankenese. The Blankeneser Strandweg (Blankeneser Beach Path) in Blankenese on the Elbe is a wonderful promenade with breath-taking views of this beautiful river. Here you can go shopping in exclusive boutiques and admire the beautiful old buildings. Shopaholics will get their money's worth in Hamburg's Inner City.

Hamburg is also a vibrant hub for trendsetters and party fans. St. Pauli, the Sternschanze, Eimsbüttel, Altona, Ottensen and St. Georg are famous places to paint the town red. These districts are known for their relaxed and multicultural flair, shaped by the many students, young families and artists from all over the world who have decided to call these places home. The bars and clubs are many, and the curfews few. The famous Reeperbahn in St. Pauli – also called the “Kiez” – is considered to be the epicentre of Hamburg’s nightlife.

On a budget or on the look out for luxury, in the centre city or on the Elbe, it doesn’t matter in which part of Hamburg you’d like to spend your holiday – you’ll be sure to find the perfect accommodation with us. Choose your favourite from a multitude of Hamburg holiday apartments! In our Hamburg Regions section you will find interesting information about Hamburg’s individual districts and their surrounding environs.

Hamburg Tourism

There are innumerable tourist attractions in Hamburg: for example the Town Hall, the St. Michaelis Church – lovingly referred to as the “Michel" by locals – the Hamburg Harbour, as well as the Hamburg Fish Market, the Reeperbahn, the State Opera House, the Kunsthalle (Art Hall), the Deutsches Schauspielhaus (German Theatre), and the Landungsbrücken (Landing Bridges).

Sports fans are also well taken care of up here in the north: a multitude of sporting events take place every year, like the “Holsten City Man” or the “Tennis Masters Series” in Rothenbaum. There is also a big emphasis on football. Hamburg is currently represented in the professional leagues by two teams – the Hamburg SV in the first Bundesliga and St. Pauli in the second – and was a proud host of the FIFA World Cup in 2006.

However, Hamburg is more an overall work of art than the sum of its attractions. A special feeling of vitality pervades the city. Whether it be ships sailing through the foggy Hamburg Harbour, a night time stroll down the Reeperbahn or a walk through the Speicherstadt – Hamburg always has something special to offer. Those who have come under the spell of this enchanting city will never want to leave.

We wish you a wonderful holiday and an unforgettable stay in your choice of holiday apartments in Hamburg!
